For years, the default question in Evans on a Friday night pointed west. Washington Road for the chains, Furys Ferry for a drive, or Broad Street in Augusta for anything with a menu that changed. That commute is now optional. Between fall 2025 and summer 2026, the block bounded by Evans Town Center Boulevard, Ronald Reagan Drive, and Town Park Boulevard added three locally owned restaurants, a ticketed 250th-anniversary Independence Day event, and a Performing Arts Center calendar dense enough to justify staying inside 30809 most weeks.
The thesis is simple. The gravitational center of an Evans weeknight moved about four miles east, and it happened faster than most residents' habits caught up.
The half-mile that rewrote the week
If you drop a pin at the Columbia County Performing Arts Center and draw a half-mile circle, you now capture a breakfast operator, two dinner-and-bar rooms, a fine-dining build in progress, an amphitheater, a park with a Saturday market, and the library. That density is new. As recently as 2023, the corner of The Plaza at Evans Towne Center held a shuttered space where Stay had operated, and the northeast corner of the park had grass where a Scandinavian restaurant will open this summer.

The takeaway is not that any single one of these venues is remarkable in isolation. It is that they are close enough together to chain in a single evening on foot.
Three restaurants worth updating your mental map for
Towne Center Tavern
At 7025 Evans Town Center Boulevard, the local owners of Mellow Mushroom, Shawn and Katy Ledford, opened a casual American tavern with a menu that blends classic favorites in a tavern environment designed for the whole family. The room itself was designed around the park. Ledford said as much when he explained the location choice, citing the foot traffic from the park and the performing arts center as the reason he wanted that specific building. The second-floor patio faces the amphitheater lawn, which is the point.
The menu leans elevated American pub food, with hand-cut fries, house-smoked wings, a Steak Dipper of sliced ribeye and provolone on a hoagie, and a TCT Dipper of smoked meatloaf, onions, and gouda on a Cuban roll. It opened for dinner during Masters week 2025 and added lunch service after the tournament, which means by summer 2026 it has a full year of operating rhythm behind it.
Winston's Tavern
Winston's occupies the harder-to-fill space next to Sully Steamers at The Plaza. A new restaurant opened in Columbia County in October, offering elevated dining near the Performing Arts Center. The positioning is deliberate. Manager Hlavin told WRDW the restaurant positions itself as a destination for date nights or pre-show dining before events at the Performing Arts Center. Operationally, note the schedule quirk: Winston's Tavern is open every day except Sunday, with the bar opening at 4 p.m. If your default weekend habit is Sunday dinner out, this is not the room.
Nordhavn-Rustik
The most structural change of the three is not yet open. Nordhavn Rustik, a two-part concept combining a Nordic European fine dining restaurant with a European-style bakery and cafe, plans to open in summer 2026 at 406 Town Park Blvd. The build is unusual in three ways. The architecture is Scandinavian rather than Southern-traditional. It is a standalone building, roughly 6,000 square feet. And the operator is not a chain scout.
A retired Army surgeon who encountered this style of restaurant while traveling through northern Europe, decided Evans was ready for it, and put his own name on a groundbreaking ceremony is not a passive investor. He is someone with a stake in the community who is willing to bet his credibility that the market has matured enough to support it.
The Rustik side of the concept is worth understanding because it changes daytime patterns, not just dinner ones. Executive chef Justin Hayes described the daytime function as a deli and a bakery that you can come hang out in, do your schoolwork, study, or have small meetings. That fills a gap. Evans has coffee shops and it has restaurants, but a European-style bakery-cafe with all-day seating is a category the corridor hasn't had.
BOOM! in the Park is a different event this year
The July 4 event at the park is not a repeat of last year's format. Columbia County is proud to announce plans for BOOM! in the Park 2026, the annual Independence Day celebration at Evans Towne Center Park. Presented by Bank of America, this year's event will honor the nation's 250th anniversary with a spectacular evening featuring a drone show, live entertainment, and an enhanced fireworks display.
The logistics also changed, and this is where residents who show up with 2024 assumptions will run into friction.
To ensure a comfortable and family-friendly environment, this year's celebration will be ticket-only entry. All attendees must adhere to a clear bag policy.
A few practical details worth planning around:
- Individuals under 17 must be accompanied by an adult 21 or older, verified by ID.
- An adult may accompany a maximum of four children under 17, and children under 5 do not need a ticket.
- There is no re-entry once guests exit.
- Gates close for entry at 9:00 PM and are exit only after that point.
For anyone who lives close enough to walk over from Highland Lakes, River Island, or the neighborhoods off Hereford Farm, the no-re-entry rule is the one to internalize. Plan to arrive with your evening food and drink decisions already made, and treat the walk over as the beginning of the event rather than an intermission.
What to build the rest of July around
The Columbia County calendar keeps the rest of July usefully full. Between recurring library programming and dated events, a resident can put together most weekends without leaving town. Here are the anchors:
- July 4, Evans Towne Center Park at 7016 Evans Town Center Boulevard for BOOM! in the Park with the 250th-anniversary drone show.
- Saturdays at 1005 Market Street for the county's community events, including Evans Market. The county describes it as your go-to for local crafters, meats, plants, produce and more, and the July calendar lists market activity across four Saturdays.
- July at the Evans Library, 7022 Evans Town Center Boulevard, where the Teen Tea Club blend for the month is Sakura Green Tea, available in the YA room while supplies last. The Unearth a Story Summer Reading Program runs through July 30.
- Aug 28 at the Performing Arts Center for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, if you want to close out summer with a show that doesn't require an interstate drive.
The PAC's own summer-into-fall run is worth glancing at now while ticketing is still open. The June window included Mrs. Doubtfire on the 9th and Six the Musical from the 10th through the 13th, and the fall side of the calendar includes Daniel Tosh on October 14, Air Supply on October 15, and Rodney Carrington on October 30. The venue seats roughly 2,100, which means "sold out" happens faster than the room feels like it should.
A Saturday inside 30809 that used to require a drive
Here is what the density above buys you on an ordinary Saturday in July.
Breakfast at Eggs Up Grill at The Shoppes at Evans Towne Park. This one has a small backstory worth knowing. Eggs Up Grill opened in early 2025 at the Shoppes at Evans Towne Park, 1200 Towne Park Lane, after a planned December 2024 opening was pushed back by Hurricane Helene. The operator is Clarissa and Alvin Knotts, a father-daughter duo who signed a four-location development agreement that makes Evans their flagship market. Flagship is a real word here, not a marketing one. This is where the concept's Georgia footprint starts.
From breakfast, walk to the park for Evans Market. Then take the loop past the Lady A Pavilion, cut through to the library, and use the amphitheater's tiered outdoor seating for whatever afternoon programming is on. Adjacent to the Columbia County Library, the amphitheater is an intimate setting for a tiered seating outdoor show.
Late afternoon, if you have a PAC ticket, dinner at Winston's or Towne Center Tavern before the show. If you do not, the park's evening lawn is the second option, and Towne Center Tavern's second-floor patio was designed to catch exactly that spillover.
None of the individual stops on this list are new to the CSRA. What is new is the sequencing. As recently as two years ago, this day required at least one leg out of Evans, usually to Washington Road or downtown Augusta. It no longer does. That is what has changed.
